Manufacturing is a monitoring and integration problem before it is an analytics one. Machines produce signal; the difficulty is getting it out of equipment that was not designed to share it, and into a form operations can read.

Maintenance is usually scheduled or reactive. Both leave a gap: a fault developing between intervals is found by failure, and the cost of that failure is rarely limited to the part that broke.
